“What are the odds” ってどういう意味？

先日、海外ドラマを見ていたときに出てきた “What are the odds?” というフレーズ。

作中では「うわぁ、すごい確率で会ったね」「偶然だね」といった意味で使われていました。

というのも、このフレーズは「期待していなかったことが偶然起こったとき」にネイティブがよく使う表現なんです。

他にも

What a coincidence!

このように、同じ意味で使える他の表現もあります。

“What are the odds?” の使い方

“What are the odds?” は、

こんな意味があります。

“What are the odds?” の発音

“odds” には「可能性」「確率」という意味があります。

競馬などの賭け事で耳にする「オッズ」は、この “odds” のことです。

ちなみに、文章の最後が『？』で終わっていますが、誰かに質問をするというよりも、「え！？」という驚きや戸惑いのニュアンスが含まれます。
